What can you use the app for?

Zalongo is an online place for families to congregate, share content and stay connected. It is a safe, secure and family-friendly site. While many families feel that they have to have a Facebook account to stay connected, Zalongo offers an alternative. Users don't need to worry about creepy co-workers or unwanted people accessing their family photos or getting the latest scoop about them through Facebook. Additionally, users don't need to compete with the Farmville requests. Families can feel comfortable having little ones and grandma alike accessing and being showcased on their Zalongo account since it is only available to invited friends and family members. Zalongo allows users to post large, beautiful photos, so no longer are they limited to small clips and compressed-down photos of the kids. Zalongo users can also post wish-lists, so buying for one another is much easier and there is no risk of buying someone a gift that they won't like or appreciate. Families can also have a calendar so they can remain on the same page for important dates and recipes can be shared across the internet in a simple and timeless way. Zalongo is the alternative to Facebook for family.

What is the history and popularity of the app?

As of March 2012, Zalongo was the hosting site for over 500 families and growing. The site is developed by Hal Gatewood. Aside from this there is not much information about the project available online.

What are the differences to other apps?

Unlike Facebook, Zalongo is secure and only invited family members can access the content hosted there. This is a nice place to post photos and videos of the kids not only because it is limited to the family, but also since the photos and videos can be displayed as high resolution so grandma won't need her glasses to view them!

How does the web app look and feel to use?

Zalongo is well designed and its features are easy to use. The idea of uploading family recipes, keeping a family calendar and having a safe a separate family account from Facebook are all very appealing. The family site template that Zalongo provides is great for the whole family. The only issue encountered during this review was an error when trying to access the Help page for more information. The site does appear to be pretty new since they are hosting just over 500 families. Over time these issues should hopefully be resolved. The site operates smoothly and files upload to the site quickly, making the whole Zalongo experience pretty enjoyable.

How does the registration process work?

Signing up for Zalongo is free and easy to do. New users will need to provide their email address, a password and enter in a anti-spam code to verify that they are not a bot. From there users can setup their website, post content and invite family members to partake.

What does it cost to use the application?

Zalongo is free to use. There were no indications as to a file storage limit on the site, so one may conclude that it is unlimited as long as the site is being used for its intended purpose.

Who would you recommend the application to?

Zalongo is a great application for anyone wanting to keep their family life separate from their Facebook life. Many feel uncomfortable posting pictures of their kids onto a social network like Facebook due to all the many people who can access that content. Zalongo solves this and has created a fun and easy place for families to interact online and post the things that are important to them.

  • Post messages to share with the family
  • Activity and RSS feeds help keep family members current with the latest news
  • Photos are nicely grouped into sets
  • Nice, large photo sizes can be uploaded to Zalongo
